I hear it quite often. “My metabolism is slowing down and there’s nothing I can do about it because I’m getting old.” Well YES YOU CAN! Adults can lose about one-half pound of muscle per year after the age of 20 mostly due to decreased activity. Life happens fast and we become less active pretty quick with careers, families, etc. As referenced before, there are many benefits to resistance or weight training including Increased muscle mass. *The more muscle you have the higher your metabolism is – even at rest (BMR).
Half a pound a year of muscle adds up. Just think that could be 5lbs by age 30 or even a whopping 10lbs of metabolism boosting muscle by the time you’re 40. So the excuse that my metabolism is slowing down because I’m getting old isn’t totally fiction. But it’s an excuse that you’re in control of and responsible for. Keep your muscle mass by some type of resistance training/weight lifting and it will help keep your metabolism going or actually increase it if you add some muscle!
(*Muscle mass helps determine the number of calories someone will burn at rest which is also called your BMR or basal metabolic rate. As the amount of muscle mass you have increases, BMR increases.)
